Frequently asked questions
Can I try Beacon 73 without a callsign?
Yes. Choose Explore Demo on first launch or in Settings. Demo Mode uses simulated station data, does not request location access, and cannot transmit.
Why do I need a callsign and APRS-IS passcode?
They identify an authorized amateur-radio operator to APRS-IS. Use only a callsign you are licensed or otherwise authorized to operate. An APRS-IS passcode is not an FCC or website password.
Why does Beacon 73 request location access?
While using the app, location centers the nearby-station map and supplies positions you explicitly choose to beacon. “Always” access lets enabled auto-beaconing continue when the screen is locked. Demo Mode works without location permission.
How do I stop transmitting?
Turn off auto-beaconing on the Home screen. You can also set Beaconing Mode to Manual in Settings. Beacon 73 stops background location activity when auto-beaconing is off.
Why did my passcode remain after reinstalling?
The passcode is stored in the iOS Keychain, which may survive an app deletion on the same device. To remove it, clear the Passcode field in Settings and leave the screen so the change is saved.
Why don’t I see a nearby station?
Check the station receive radius and the moving, fixed, and weather station filters in Settings. APRS coverage and reporting intervals vary, and not every packet contains a position Beacon 73 can display.
Important limitations
- Beacon 73 requires iOS 17 or later.
- Internet access is required for live APRS-IS data.
- Beacon 73 is not an emergency, navigation, dispatch, or safety-of-life service.
- APRS positions may be delayed, incomplete, inaccurate, relayed to radio networks, or retained by independent services.
